Rascals Musical Society began development in early 2015. From 2013–2015, Founder, Zoe Landis worked as a drama specialist at an American Summer Camp in Ohio. There, she witnessed the incredible development that children underwent when creating productions and diving headfirst into the process. Upon returning to Australia she continued to research the benefits the combination of music, dance and drama had in young children and she began to develop the idea of a musical society that operates for the sole purpose of focusing on these essential life skills.
In January 2016 Rascals Musical Society held auditions for their first production, High School Musical Jr in Lindfield which was performed in the Macquarie University Lighthouse Theatre. Since then, RASCALS has held many more productions and workshops and continues to grow and develop with its students.
Rascals Musical Society is the only children's theatre society that does not focus on creating star performers bound for Broadway. We do not make promises of stardom and a future in lights. We promise confidence. We promise social skills. We promise creativity. We promise self-efficacy. We promise to support students development into their best self.
Where other groups require the focus on production quality, we require the focus on the production process which, in our eyes is the most important element of a show. We want children to leave the program feeling better and brighter about their ability to be themselves and navigate their world. That is our promise.
